Could it be something simple?

Sometimes an AC problem really is simple. These four checks can save you a service call—and if they don’t solve it, they give us useful information before we arrive.

Thermostat is set to COOL
Set the temperature several degrees below room temperature.
Air filter isn’t clogged
A severely restricted filter can reduce airflow and contribute to freezing.
Breaker hasn’t tripped
If it trips again after being reset once, stop resetting it and call for service.
Outdoor unit is clear
Make sure it isn’t buried in weeds, cottonwood, leaves, or debris.

Airflow problems

Dirty filters, dirty coils, blower problems, closed dampers, duct restrictions, and incorrect setup can all reduce cooling performance.

Electrical failures

Capacitors, contactors, wiring, controls, motors, safeties, and power issues can keep equipment from starting or operating correctly.

Refrigeration problems

Low charge, leaks, restrictions, metering-device problems, and compressor issues require proper measurements—not pressure guessing.

Heat-transfer problems

Dirty condenser or evaporator coils can make a system work harder while moving less heat out of your home.

Repair First

Replacement isn’t automatically the answer because your equipment is old.

Age matters—but so do condition, failure type, refrigerant, repair cost, comfort, efficiency, and what you want from the system. If a reasonable repair can keep the equipment doing its job, we’ll tell you. If replacement makes more sense, we’ll explain why.

AC Repair Questions

Questions homeowners ask us all the time.

Should I shut the AC off if the coil or refrigerant line is frozen?

Yes. Continuing to run a frozen system usually makes the icing worse. Turn cooling off and allow the system to thaw before diagnosis.

Does low refrigerant mean I just need more refrigerant?

Not necessarily. A properly sealed system doesn’t consume refrigerant like fuel. Low charge can indicate a leak or another charging issue that needs to be understood first.

Can a dirty filter really stop an AC from cooling?

Yes. Severe airflow restriction can reduce heat transfer and can contribute to the evaporator coil freezing.

Do I have to replace an older R-22 system if it breaks?

No automatic rule says an older system must be replaced. Whether repair makes sense depends on the specific failure, equipment condition, refrigerant considerations, and repair economics.
