Three patterns worth separating.
Pay attention to what you already notice during normal operation. You don’t need to open the furnace or keep restarting it to gather clues.
Cool briefly, then warm
A brief cool period at startup can happen before warm air reaches the registers. If the air warms and the home reaches its setting, note the pattern. Startup timing varies by equipment. [1]
Cool between heating cycles
A thermostat fan set to ON can circulate room-temperature air while the burners are off. That moving air may feel chilly even though the furnace heats normally when called. [1]
Never warm, or turns cool too soon
Note whether the house is losing temperature, whether the fan keeps running, and whether it happens at every register. Share that pattern when requesting service.

Confirm there is a call for heat
Select HEAT and a temperature above the room reading. Check the current schedule or hold setting. If the problem began after a thermostat change, tell us; compatibility or setup may need attention. [2]
Check the separate fan setting
Try FAN: AUTO instead of continuous ON. On many thermostats this setting is separate from the heating mode. Observe whether the cool airflow was happening only between heating calls. [1]
Inspect an accessible filter
Turn equipment off and follow the owner’s manual for filter access. Replace a dirty disposable filter with the specified type and size. Keep the filter installed during normal operation. [2]
Clear the room grilles
Keep supply registers open and return grilles free of furniture or rugs. Note rooms that feel different from the rest of the house. Avoid closing more vents to force heat elsewhere. [1]

The burners aren’t lighting or staying lit
An ignition problem can stop heat production. If the furnace cannot confirm flame, the control can shut the gas off. A technician checks the ignition and flame-detection process to establish the cause. [4]
A temperature safety control has operated
If the furnace overheats, a high-limit control can stop the burners while the fan runs to cool the equipment. The cause of the overheating needs investigation; the control may be doing its job. [3]
Drainage interrupts a condensing furnace
High-efficiency condensing furnaces make condensate during heating. Drainage problems can interrupt operation. Mention visible water or pump trouble without disconnecting hoses, traps, or safety devices. [2]
Heat is being lost in the duct system
Duct leakage can affect delivered heat, especially through unconditioned spaces. A room-by-room pattern helps guide an airflow and duct evaluation; a cool register alone doesn’t establish a duct leak. [2]
The house needs heat, but the air stays cool.
Request service when the simple checks don’t help, warm air repeatedly fades before the room reaches its setting, or the furnace keeps attempting to start. Avoid repeated power resets or internal adjustments.
For a loud ignition bang, smoke, sparks, or a strong electrical burning odor, stop using the equipment. Leave and call 911 if there is fire or immediate danger. Use the gas and carbon monoxide instructions above for those emergencies.

Is a little cool air at startup always a problem?
No. A brief cool period can occur before warm air reaches the room. What matters is whether useful heat follows and the home warms normally. Follow the model’s startup guidance; there isn’t one wait time for every furnace. [1]
Why does the fan keep running after the heat stops?
The blower can continue to move heat out of the furnace after burner operation. It may also run during an overheating shutdown. The surrounding pattern matters: comfortable room temperature and a completed cycle are different from repeated loss of heat. [3]
Can a dirty filter cause cool air even if the fan works?
Restricted airflow can contribute to overheating. If a temperature limit shuts the burners off, the fan can continue running. Replacing a dirty filter may help, but recurring shutdowns need diagnosis. [3]
Should I clean the flame sensor myself?
Leave flame sensors and ignition components to a technician. They’re part of the furnace’s combustion safety system. A fan blowing cool air doesn’t tell you which component needs service. [4]
